Quick Overview

A bit drier in tone and less well-filled than either of its two mates, this wine may not lack for ripeness, but it is decidedly limited in basic fruit. It hints at dried brush and tree bark, and its slightly coarse, unbuffered tannins combine with obvious heat to rough up its ragged and ungainly finish.

• 50- to 80-year-old vines prove that, with Zin, older means more intense fruit flavors

• Well-muscled—packs a collective wallop of black cherry, blueberry, and plum

• A gutsy field blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Carignane, and Mixed Blacks

Unlike many grapevines that peak at 25 or so years, Zin vines gain life experience as they age for added depth, concentration, and weight. That’s especially true of Zinfandel grown in Sonoma County. With this Zin, flavors of blackberry, black cherry, cinnamon, and vanilla follow fast on the heels of super ripe berry aromas. All in all, a layered wine with a succulent center, balanced acids, and tannins that build structure. Gotta have this wine with hearty meat dishes and vegetable stews.
