Situated on Dry River Road, 7 km south of the Martinborough village, Murdoch James is different to the other Martinborough winegrowers by way of its limestone and clay soils on uplifted seabed. The majority of plantings are on slopes, again different to the flat land plantings general to the region. The original plantings, dating back to 26 years of age have been supplemented by the purchase of a neighbouring 20 ha block, nearly doubling the area of vines. This has been enabled by the purchase of the estate by Charles Zhang, who also has the contacts to ensure growth in the promising Chinese market. The Murdoch James labelling has tightened up, the ‘Martinborough’ wines including grower fruit, while the ‘Blue Rock’ wines are single-estate expressions. Carl Fraser is the winemaker, in charge since 2005.
