“Secateurs are the pruning shears that shape our vines – a tribute to the workers who are already crafting the wine during the cold winters of the Cape. This wine is made by the Badenhorst family who have been producing quality wines for three generations in South Africa. The grapes were hand-harvested from selected old bushvine vineyards on granite slopes. In the cellar, traditional winemaking methods are followed with natural fermentation in old casks and concrete vats. This detail results in wines with fine complexity and a unique character. This wine can be enjoyed now or with careful cellaring over the next couple of years.” —winemaker

The 2015 spent time on its lees in concrete tanks and old casks – this is an important part of the maturation and gives incredible texture and palate weight to the wine. The aromas are flinty with honey, orange blossom and white stone fruit notes. The 2015 Secateurs Chenin Blanc, which comes from bush vines planted on granite slopes, has a pleasant bouquet with dried lemon peel, a touch of marzipan and lime flower that is well-defined. The palate is well-balanced with a slight viscosity on the opening, but the feisty acidity then kicks in and lends the middle and finish satisfying tension and vibrancy. There is a pleasant bitter lemon twist on the aftertaste that drags you back for another sip. Great value – as always. Drink now.
