Villa Maria has a long held objective to be environmentally responsible and to operate using sustainable practices. Fruit for this wine was sourced exclusively from our Templar Vineyard situated in Marlborough’s Awatere Valley. We have been operating this vineyard organically since 2010, with 25 hectares now fully BioGro-certified (as at February 2013). This low cropping vineyard is managed with a focus on enhancing soil vitality to grow healthy and balanced vines, utilising organic products and methods to work with nature to ensure quality fruit.
The vineyard occupies two gently sloping river terraces perched above the Awatere River, with each picked on flavour and processed separately to provide a number of blending options. All parcels received skin contact in the winery to enhance the intensity of flavours, before the fruit was gently pressed, cold settled and racked for fermentation. Cool fermentation techniques were used to retain purity of flavour and aromatics. After fermentation the wines remained on yeast lees for several months to build richness and mouthfeel. The wine was then racked and blended, gently fined, filtered and immediately bottled, capturing purity of flavour, freshness and richness.
An intense expression of Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, bursting with distinct Awatere Valley aromas of snow pea, kaffir lime and gooseberry. The wine is powerful and refined, displaying vibrant grapefruit and subtle passionfruit notes with fantastic mid-palate weight, and a balanced acidity. Enjoy up to 2 years after release.
